Introduction

How to use the manual
This framework has been written to provide one coherent document, a one-stop manual that enables places of learning to ensure compliance with all national requirements and mandatory initiatives and at the same time to take on board the latest research on ensuring effective learning. It is based on the fundamental premise that:

  • Learning begins with the learner and that teaching must be adapted as a result of what we know about how learners learn.
  • Learning should be tailored to the individual.
  • Learning will not be effective unless it is perceived to be relevant.
  • Learning should develop the whole individual.
  • The highest standards in the core subjects of English, mathematics, science and information communication technology can best be achieved via learners being encouraged to think creatively.
  • Effective learning is dependent on a broad and vibrant curriculum that embraces arts, physical education and the planned development of social skills.

The framework is multifunctional

 It can be used as:

1. A self-evaluation schedule at place of learning level

a self-evaluation schedule at place of learning levelIt is designed to be used as a self-evaluation schedule but is unique in that it also provides the means to develop those areas that are identified for development.

  • It is written to match School Evaluation Form (SEF headings ) from the Ofsted framework 2005 so will feed directly into that.
  • Areas that come under different aspects of Every Child Matters are highlighted for your reference so you can be sure you have covered everything.
  • Use the framework contents list to audit your current provision.
  • Using school-based evidence identify those areas which will most benefit your learners.
  • Turn to the first page of the relevant section for exemplification, more details and resource lists.
  • The second part of each section is designed for exemplar materials and case studies.
  • Use the results to inform improvement planning and monitoring.
  • Use the information to plan training.

2. A self-evaluation schedule at individual level

Use it as a professional development tool for individual teachers to:

  • Allow teachers to rate their own individual competencies and choose areas for development using the framework guidance.
  • Support performance management, evaluating performance and negotiating targets and areas for development.

3. A continually evolving means for schools to network and share materials and resources

  • Teachers are supported through resource suggestions and encouraged to develop projects within sections of the framework.  This is motivating, professionally satisfying and makes optimum use of time and resources.
  • Training based on framework sections can be provided at LA and place of learning level, with conferences and workshops incorporated as necessary.
  • Resource materials and case studies produced by teachers will be included in regular updates to the framework.
  • Sections will  be updated and replaced as new research and initiatives emerge.
